Embrace the Korean 10-Step Skincare Routine

What is the 10-Step Korean Skincare Routine?

10-step skincare definitely sounds exhaustive and time-consuming. However, the earlier you start this routine, the more you save later in buying expensive products in the hope of reviving the youthful appearance of your skin.  I was always wondered why all the actresses (and actors) in Korean dramas have flawless skin. Little did I know that thorough skincare is deeply embedded in their culture and they are programmed to start at a young age.

If you are like me and believe it’s time to change your routine for brighter, dewy skin, read through and try it out!

Step 1: Makeup Remover and Oil Cleanser

Makeup remover and oil-based cleansers aim to remove makeup and any other oil-based product residues such as sunscreen and pollutants. Use an oil cleanser like Banila Co Clean It Zero applying it in gentle, circular motions with your fingers to massage and clean off foundation and other makeup. For tough makeup like waterproof mascara, use a cotton round soaked in makeup remover.

Step 2: Foam or Water-Based Cleanser

Another cleanser? That’s right because after Step 1, you are still going to have stuff left over. Using a water based cleanser like Neogen Real Fresh Foam Green Tea applied to wet skin can remove any remaining impurities like sweat and dirt, leaving a completely clean face for the rest of the regime.

Step 3: Exfoliator

Regular scrubbing and peeling once a week is definitely beneficial as it removes white heads, blackheads, and any dirt that’s clogging your pores. If you are too lazy to use a scrubbing product, we highly recommend Neogen Bio-Peel Gauze Peeling Wine. It is convenient, yet gentle, even for sensitive skin.

Step 4: Toner

It is also known as “refresher” in Korean, toner can help sweep away any residue impurities from the cleansing, balance the skin’s PH level, and prep the skin for the absorption of the products in the next few steps.  Try the COSRX Galactomyces Alcohol Free Toner, which contains 10% Galactomyces Ferment Filtrate to enhance your skin moisture and remove dead skin cells.

Step 5: Essence

Essences are not to be confused with toners, though they come in a similar liquid form. They are meant to add another layer of hydration to your skin with more active ingredients. Try the Missha Time Revolution First Treatment Essence, which speeds up your cell turnover rate, giving you a bright and smooth complexion.

Step 6. Serum/Ampoule

This step is to target particular skin issues such as acne or spots. A serum will have a thicker texture than essence. If you have issues such as blackheads or scars, you can try the famous C20 Original Pure Vitamin Serum, which will improve your skin’s overall condition.

Step 7. Sheet/Hydrogel Mask

Again, you do not have to use a sheet mask every day. You can make it a once or twice a week ritual when your skin is dry and needs immediate hydration. Apart from sheet masks, Hydro gel masks like Tony Moly Intense Care Hydro Gel Mask are in trend at the moment. They are able to lock in more moisture than sheet masks. You can see the immediate effect after you use a mask and the result can be quite addictive! Remember, you do not need to use essence if you use a sheet mask.

Step 8: Eye cream

You know why you need an eye cream like Mizon Snail Repair Eye Cream. The skin around our eyes is thin and sensitive. Therefore, it needs extra attention!

Step 9: Moisturiser/Night Cream

It acts like a seal to lock in all the nutrients from the products used in previous steps. If you have dry skin, we recommend Acwell Aqua Clinity Cream. If you like to add in whitening effects, you can try Dr. Althea Power Whitening Glutathione Cream.

Step 10. Sunscreen

One last step to go before you can get out of the door! You should use a sunscreen or use a foundation with a good SPF such as Missha M Perfect Cover BB Cream SPF42. Never leave home without this step as UV rays will age your skin quickly.

The 10-steps sound lengthy, but 15 minutes a day goes a long way. Remember to massage your face at the same time where appropriate to improve the blood circulation of your skin. Give it a week or two, you should already see great results.
